Digg is also an important focus on many ongoing campaigns by Web Design Companies and Search engine marketing consultants who have used Digg successfully to drive traffic to websites. If you sih to promote your WebPages using Digg, the first step is to submit yur content to Digg. You can then follow steps to promote your content on the website.

A. Getting your content on Digg’s homepage

B. Driving traffic through Comments

These are discussed in detail below.

A. Driving Traffic by Getting Your Content on Digg’s Homepage

Your posts on Digg will be featured on the homepage if it receives votes from other users. The number of votes required varies from time to time based on the current usage. Currently an article with approximately 50 or more votes in a day stands a good chance of featuring on Digg’s homepage.

Following are some steps that can help get your content to Digg’s homepage:

  1. Attractive titles and descriptions – Submissions with an attractive/eye catching title and description tend to do better.
  2. Up-to-date information – Most social bookmarking websites like Digg promote fresh information. Content that is recent or news worthy tend to do better that content that contain old or out dated information.
  3. Content that is valuable to users and benefit them in some way tend to do better. A perfect example is a “How to guide” and “Top 10 list”.
  4. Leave comments and respond if someone leaves a comment on your story.

B. Driving Traffic through Comments

Submitting content to social bookmarking websites like Digg may be the most commonly used method to gain exposure for your stories; however leaving comments on existing content (stories) can also be effective to maximise your exposure by featuring on the homepage. Digg along with other social bookmarking websites offers a comment feature allowing users to leave comments on any stories published on the website.

While many people including Web design companies, Internet marketing experts and Website/blog owners actively try to get their content featured on Digg’s homepage, a relatively fewer number try to feature on the homepage by leaving comments on other popular posts that make it to the homepage. This can be relatively easier to do as it is easy to identify poplar content and add comments accordingly. If using this method, it is important to include a link to your website in order to receive traffic to your site.

Following are important things to consider when leaving comments on stories:

  • Don’t add comments purely for the purpose of adding links to your website. Add value to the discussion by offering information that is valuable for others.
  • Include links to relevant sections of your website. Do not add a link if it is completely not related to the story in any way.
  • Do not spam. It is absolutely essential that you do not appear to be spamming or else you will find yourself banned and your access terminated.
  • Follow the usual commenting etiquettes for Blogging. It is not necessary to comment on all stories. It is also not necessary for all your comments to have links back to your own website. Try to include links to other valuable resources and websites on the Internet as well to yours. User accounts that are seen to only post links to one or two sites all the time may be seen as spam.

If you are looking to promote your website by boosting traffic, then social bookmarking can prove to be an effective tool. Digg in particular is very popular and can bring amazing results, both in the long term as well short term. It is however vital not to cheat the system or use black-hat tricks to promote your site within Digg. Social bookmarking websites, like major search engines, are humanly edited as well as powered by powerful algorithms. Any attempts to cheat or influence its results can be easily detected and result in a ban. Digg along with other social bookmarking sites are a powerful tool and must for any successful campaign to promote your site. The risk of getting banned is not worth it and can be damaging to your brand.

Its totally depends on seo purpose but when we put comments on a post we should always give a relative and meaning full comments not only a “haha or nice post”. We must proper read the post and then understand and then put a comment. But i really appreciated your ideas about social networking.

You are right, posting one liner comments such as ‘Nice post’ is completely meaningless. It only takes a few extra seconds to comment with something relevant and this time is worth the investment. One liner comments not only appear spammy but can also lead to a negative impression for your brand. Regular commentators are often recognisable due to their avatar or profile. The last thing you want is your brand to be associated with spam in general. One liner comments are also often a result of using auto spamming or similar such tools which should be avoided at all costs.
