The Blog
SEO is a competitive, time consuming and labour intensive process. A website needs to focus on various on-page and external SEO factors to achieve a favourable rank on search engines.
A good SEO tool is essential to measure your website’s performance and improve the chances of ranking on the first page of Google. The market is flooded with many SEO tools, both free and paid. This makes it difficult to find the right tool for your business.
In this post we take a look at SEO toolbar, a popular free tool that I highly recommend whether you are an SEO expert or just started to learn SEO.
Watch the SEO Toolbar video below to learn how to use it:
How To Use SEO Toolbar?
SEO tool bar is an add-on for the Firefox browser.
Step1: Install Firefox browser if you don’t already have it on your computer.
SEO Toolbar will not work with Internet Explorer or other browsers. You can install Firefox alongside your existing browser if you prefer and use Firefox when you want to use the SEO tool.
Step 2: Once Firefox is installed open it, then simply click on the download link for SEO Toolbar to install the browser add-on.
Step3: Once the SEO Toolbar Firefox add-on is installed, all you need to do is visit any website in Firefox. You will notice additional SEO options at the bottom of your Firefox toolbar.
See image below:

Here is what it does:
- Puts a variety of SEO data and metrics at your fingertips at the top of your browser as you browse the web
- Allows you to quickly compare SEO factors of sites against each other
- Gives you access to built-in Rank checker tool
Tip:
If you are casually surfing you may want to turn this extension off. To do so, click on the SEO Toolbar logo, and then click on the “Turn Toolbar off” link at the bottom of the menu.
SEO Toolbar Features:

As you surf the web the SEO Toolbar pulls useful market research data right into your browser, including:
1. Link Information
Links: Shows a rough estimate of the total number of back-links pointing at a domain.
Page Links: Shows a rough estimate of the total number of links pointing at a specific page on a website as opposed to the entire website.
Additionally, you can also view a breakdown of the incoming links e.g. unique linking domains, .edu or .gov links which are considered to have higher influence
2. Directory Information
Of all online directories, getting your site listed on the following 3 directories is considered to be the most beneficial for improving your search engine rank.
- Dmoz (Google Directory)
- dir.yahoo.com
- BOTW
The SEO toolbar searches these directories and lets you know if the site you are visiting in your browser is listed or not.
3. Other Competitive Details
PR: (Google PageRank) an estimated measure of global link authority
Age: The total age of the domain name as pulled from Archive.org.
4. Advanced Information Button
The advanced information button brings up other SEO related details, including
- Site background information
- Site links
- Page links
- Directory listings
- Traffic estimates
- Social media information from popular social bookmarking and social news sites
See image below:

5. Highlight Nofollow Links
The Nofollow buton, which can be turned on or off with a click, highlights the nofollow links on a webpage.
“Nofollow” is an attribute applied to link code that limits search engines from passing on authority to the destination page. You can use this feature to identify the value of links and to find link opportunities for your site.
6. Rank Checker
Rank Checker is actually a separate popular SEO tool. It is a very useful that lets you check and compare the rank of webpages on various search engine for any search term. This tool is now fully built-in to SEO toolbar.
7. On Page Analysis (SEO X-ray)
SEO X-ray is another popular on page SEO analysis tool that is also built into SEO toolbar. This helps you analyse various on-page SEO factors e.g. page headings, internal links, external links, as well as keyword density.
8. Compare Websites
It also lets you compare SEO factors of up to 5 sites at a time which can be great for competitive analysis.
9. Highlight Keywords on a Page
The highlighter between the book and the green globe allows you to highlight keywords that appear on a page.

I didn’t know of SEO Toolbar before but I am amazed to see its free. I have used IBP before but software that works in Firefox toolbar is even easier.
Lyden,
I think SEO Toolbar is one of the better tools out there for SEO. What I like about this, apart from the fact that it’s free, is that it offers much more than just backlink analysis. It tackles almost all aspects of SEO.
SEO toolbar is an excellent SEO tool. It has many powerful features and all for free. Only drawback is that you need to be Forefox user to use this but its still worth every effort if you have to install Firefox.

Ginee,
SEO toolbar is indeed a great free tool. Sure, there are other tools out there but what I like about SEO toolbar is that it combines most essential SEO analytic methods one needs for SEO, all combined into one tool for free.
Very useful toolbar thanks for sharing this. With things like the Penguin updates assessing who your linking to has become more important and also to get a value of their content. Having the SEO toolbar does make it easier and instant to see how the site your visiting holds up.
