It's all a game(if you do not rely on the money income) to see if your work have success or not. Even after months it still thrills me to see if my sites or the sites of my customers are still ranked top/good. If you know what you are doing, expecially in seo and webdesign than everything should be fine. I think there are a lot of really good webdesigners out there doing great jobs on greating stunning websites... But they all forget the seo part by putting headers as images into the website or using ajax-powered rollout menus to there site...

As pointed out in the comment above, the thrill from seeing your website rank high on Google due to months of hard work is difficult to put in words. Anyone who has achieved this can easily understand. When designing or maintianing a website, the power of quality content is sometimes under estimated. It might feature as one of the many different techniques to improve your website's search engine rank, howeever the extent of the benefit can sometimes be over shadowed by other Search engine optimisation techniques. We have been in the web design business for many years now and we have an active SEO campaign for to market our own web design services. In the first year we focused mainly on other SEO methods and new content on our website was rarely added. However it is only in the past 8 months or so since we shifted our focus to adding new content on our website on a weedly basis, that we have seen real benefits from our website. Today we receive a large proportion of our business from our website and our website has become the most valuable marketing tool for our business.

Going back to the origional topic of this article,a professional looking web design is important but its what we do with it afterwards; that will determine its success or failure on the internet.

This is a good post! Imagine the rush of adrenalin on seeing your site come up for all relevant keywords and attract new and repeat customers because your content and your services are so relevant, fresh and useful. I think most site owners are misdirected and misinformed about how the whole space works and therefore believe that having a website never made sense for them.
But Like you said "Your website is the virtual representation of your company whether your company is a traditional or exists only on the Internet" Its best to take control of your website than to expect outsiders to align the site to your business goals. Services Like Yahoo Small Business's (http://in.business.yahoo.com/) have been far more useful in keeping the site relevant and refreshed.

I agree that web design needs careful planning. Everything must be well planned before actually doing the work to avoid delay and wasting money and effort.

Web design should match to whatever goals you may have to ensure success.
