Identifying Twitter Goals – 5 Tips for Success
Identifying twitter goals for your business is important. Companies across the world are using Twitter to grow their business. Media companies such as the BBC and CNN are using Twitter as a successful medium for delivering real-time news to customers. Retailers such as Dell and Amazon have proved that Twitter can also be used to drive new sales for a business. For many small businesses however, the benefits may not be as clearly evident. Businesses that have failed to realise the benefits of Twitter are mostly those who have failed to define a clear strategy for their business.
1) Make a list of your goals
Twitter can be used to achieve a number of objectives. It is important to devise a clear cut strategy that focuses on achieving realistic goals for your business. You should make a list of what you expect to achieve for your business via twitter. It is important to have realistic goals. Examples of what a business may wish to achieve are listed below. It is different for every company:
Build your company’s brand
Drive traffic to your company’s website
Attract new readers for your blog
Share your expertise in your area
Inform your customers of sales and special offers
Offer technical support
Communicate and network with colleagues
2) Focus on achieving your Goals
It is important to ensure that you focus on achieving your objectives. It is very easy to loose sight of your goals and spend valuable time sharing information that does not take you any closer to your goals. If you do not follow a well defined strategy, then your followers may grow but you will fail to see real benefits for your business. Building your presence on Twitter takes time and if your business does not receive real benefits, it can lead to a waste of valuable resources.
3) Communicate the benefits clearly
Over 40 million users use twitter and new users join every day. Well defined goals will help you to identify the market you should target as well as the places you can use to promote yourself. No matter what channels you use to promote your twitter group, the benefits of following you on twitter should be clearly communicated. This will in-turn allow you to attract the right followers.
4) Post relevant content and frequently
Your goals should play a role in deciding what you tweet about and the type of information you share on Twitter. The content you post and its frequency should be in line with the goals and objectives you have set out to achieve for your business. In general however you should post updates frequently as followers expect timely updates. You should also be aware that messages by people you follow are also posted to your Twitter page. The people you follow should thus be chosen with care and be related to your goals in some way.
5) Use the right tools to help you achieve your goals
Twitter has a powerful API that allows developers and programmers to extend its functionality by developing powerful applications that can interact with twitter. This has resulted in a number of third-party tools that can enable your business to maximise the benefits of twitter. You should find the tools that will help you achieve your goals. Tools like Tweetdeck that allow you to post content from your desktop or mobile to Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and other social networks at once. This can save you valuable time. Similarly analysis tools such as TweetStats offer a graphical analysis of your Twitter statistics.

There is also a lot of spam on Twitter. A lot of it is to do with businesses who are posting without a strategy. The important of being focused is correctly observed. This is more so for businesses than it is for personal accounts on Twitter. I guess if you are unsure, it is OK to start with some presence and build up a follower base. In long run though, you need to be more focused towards your goals.
