Top 10 factors that determine how search engines rank your website?

21 May 2008 3 Comments

Search engines like Google use many factors t decide the rank of a website. It is believed that Google uses more than million different variables to decide which website to display first when a search is performed. Although many variables are used there are some most important ones and considered most imoortant by search engine marketing experts. Some of the most important factors are listed below:· How many sites link to yours

This is one of the most important factors that decide which website ranks higher than others when a search is performed. WEebsite owners and search engine marketing specialists regularly negotiate link backs form other websites in order to improve ranking.

· How many pages your site has

Search engines and users alike love websites with new and fresh content. Websites with a lot of content and websites hat update with new content from time to time rank higher on search engine sin the long run.

· The words in your website name If the keywords you are targeting is apart of the domain name or file name it has appositive impact on search engine ranking. E.G. web page with the address ‘www.londonproperty.com’ has a much better chance of appearing on search result when someone searches for ‘Property for sale in London’ than a website with the address ‘www.xyz.com’.

· Keywords

The keywords being targeted by your website will play an important role.

· Words in bold

Main keywords you are targeting should be in bold at least at some places on each web page. Words in bold are given a higher weight than normal words. Having the main keywords as bold text is an effective technique used by Search engine marketing specialists to improve the chances of a website appearing when the word is searched for.

· Words in URL

The main keyword of the page should be a part of the file name in the URL if possible. Eg. A page that advertises property for sale should be ideally named ‘property-for-sale.html’ as opposed to ‘page-2.html’.

· More weighting is given to the first 25 words on each page

Search engines treat the first 25 words and sometimes also the last 25 words as more important than other sections. It is hence adviced to include the main keywords you are targeting within the first paragraph on the page. This will improve the chances for ranking for those keywords.

· Having more than 300 words on your home page

Search engines love text and content on a website. It is advised that for best search engine results you should have at least 300 words on the home page.

· Keyword density

Keyword density is the number of times a keyword is repeated in the content of a web page. It is measured in percentage. Keyword density is measured as a percentage of total word on a webpage. A keyword density of 2% to 5% is ideal for the keywords you are targeting.

· Google page rank

Google page rank is a score given by Google to a webpage. Page rank is a score that Google gives to a website on a scale of 1 to 10. Higher the page rank of a website the higher the chances of ranking better on Google. Although page rank is an important reflection of how optimised a website is for search engines, it does not necessarily reflect the ranking.

Many people say how long your domain is registered for is also a factor. For example if you register your domain for then years (the maximum) that gives you a higher level of importance.

With regards to Gini’s question on How a domain is registered and its impact on search engine ranking; I am not a 100% certain if registering a domain name for 10 years will influence the rank more than if it was registered for a shorter period at a time.

We know for sure that the overall age of the domain will play an important role. Nevertheless I would advise on registering a domain for long period time. There are other practical reasons to do so. It can be quite easy to forget to renew domain name or web-hosting on time. There is nothing worse than downtime due to such reasons. If your website is down for a few days then years of your search engine optimisation effort can be wasted.
