10 January 2010 One Comment

A Favicon is a small image displayed to the left of your website’s URL in the address bar of the browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc).

Favicon is important in web design. If your website has been designed by a professional Web Design Company or designer, then most likely your website already displays a custom Favicon image. On the other hand if your website does not have a Favicon, then you should create one now. A majority of the website do not have a custom icon on their website even though they are very easy to create. As most company websites do not have a custom Favicon, web browsers display the default Favicon on the address bar.

Benefits of custom Favicon design for your website

In web design, Favicons play a somewhat similar role to your company’s logo. It is displayed on every page of your website next to the address-bar among other places .

Favicon is important for Website branding. It is important to design a custom Favicon as it is very easy to create and used to represent your website.

A customer favicon adds individuality to your website. If a website does not have a custom Favicon, then the default icon of the browser is displayed instead. This can be seen as missed opportunities to promote your own brand. Instead of displaying your company‘s icon next to its website, you are displaying the browsers icon.

Where are favicons displayed?

Although, the most common use of Favicon is in the address bar, it is used in many other places to represent link to a website. The different places where a Favicon is displayed se are listed below.

1) Address bar – The most common use of favicon is when it is displayed next to your website’s URL in the address bar.

2) The history bar – History bar is the list of websites you have visited recently. It appears as a dropdown below the address bar of the website.

3) Bookmarks or Favourites – Web browsers allow us to bookmark website or add sites to our favourites. This is a way to mark websites so we can visit them again in future. The bookmark of favourites list displays the favicon next to the title of the website.

4) Shortcuts- Sometimes users save shortcuts to a website or webpage on their desktop or other folder such as My Documents. When we save shortcuts to a website, the favicon is always displayed with the shortcut. If custom favicon is not present, the default internet sign is used instead.

5) Links bar – Sometimes users tend to save important websites in the links bar displayed at the bottom of the browser. You can do so by dragging the favicon from the address bar to the links bar at the bottom right of the browser. When a website is added to a links bar, favicon is used to display the link.

Favicons are now very common. I use templates regularly for creating websites and blogs. Most templates come with favicon. For creating custom image, I use Photoshop. I can create any image or text and it allows me to save it as .ICO format which works for Favicon.
