Web Design Trends 2010
2010 promises changes and expansion of some of the exiting Web design trends of 2009. Web design trends change every year due to a number of factors such as advancements in technology and changes in consumer behaviour. It is important to do away with old web design principles and adopt new ones. New trends help web design to evolve with time and improve the creativity of websites. While it is not always possible to predict the exact changes that will take place by the end of the year, it is possible to predict the forthcoming design trends based on the subtle changes that have taken place during the last year.
Web Design Trends 2010
1. Magazine Layouts
Magazine Layouts are best suited to information portals and news based websites. The past year has seen a shift from offline mediums to online mediums of information and entertainment. Magazine style layout provides a gradual and easy transition for readers. The familiar interface is easier for readers to adapt to who are used to the similar format in this layout, content is organised on a single home page, and the user can drill down to the section as required. Blogs in particular will be quick to adopt this format.
2. Extended Footer
This trend has already picked up in the last year. However 2010 will see an even greater use of large extended footers on websites. The footers will become an integral part of many web designs. Footers will contain a range of content such as Top 10 lists, Recent Posts or articles, RSS updates, Social media updates, etc.
3. Creative background images
As internet access become faster and download times reduce, use of large high definition background images will see a rise in popularity and usage. Use of creative images in background creates an appealing and unique visual impact and brand recognition. In 2010, web designers will feel confident to use high resolution images to form creative backgrounds for their design.
4. Minimalist designs
Minimalist designs have been popular in the last few years. The minimalist design trend of 2010 however will be quite different to the traditional minimalist websites. The minimalist Website designs of 2010 will feature harp image, creative background, and creative typography in addition to white space.
5. Use of Icons
Icons will be used increasingly in web design in 2010. The use of Web 2.0 style icons has already picked up in 2009. This trend will continue and extended to other area of the website a well. Icons are easy to recognise and is known to improve usability of the website.
6. Oversized Logos/ Headers
Splash pages are so yesterday. To make an unforgettable impression on the visitor, the trend for 2010 will be oversized logos on an equally oversized header. These types of headers can take up the entire screen, but with one important note. Visitors will not need to click anything, just scroll down. Visitors often having a clicking phobia (due to years of poor navigation), so big headers do the job of a splash page without forcing your visitors to click anything.
7. Improved Social Media integration
Integration of Social Media with websites was on one of the most influential areas in web design in the last year, and is set to grow further. As more and more users use social media, websites and social profiles will come closer together. Syndication of content, single sign-on, connections between users will become even more common on websites. 2010 will see new tools that help build communities by combining websites and social media.

Thank you for your comment above. I would like to add that Web 2.0 and social media have played a key role in the recent popularity of magazine style layouts. In addition to information about the business, a typical website today includes a range of content including latest news, articles, recent content from social profiles, etc. These are easily represented on 2 or 3 column magazine style layouts.
