Authority has to swing both ways to really benefit it from it on a website.

You have to meet Google's version of authority to get ranked.

And when someone clicks on the site, you have to meet their expectations of authority for them to perform an action that is beneficial to you and them.

One without the other isn't going to work

I was very happy to run across this post. So many people misunderstand the distinction between PageRank and "authority". Your observation that authority basically can be summed up in one word - Trust - is spot on. I think of it in terms of real life. When you have someone's trust, your relationship with them is so much easier. When you break that trust, this get ugly.

Same on Internet. If you can build trust with your readers and the search engines, you get a lot more latitude in what you can do with your site in terms of link building, reciprocal linking, guest posting, etc.

For me, building an "authoritative" website is always my goal. If PageRank comes along for the ride, great.

This is a really important point when your selecting your niche.

I think many internet marketers start out with a higher
number of products and services without focus.

This leads in turn to a continual focus on writing about / setting up blogs and websites / promoting / a wide variety of affiliate products and services.

The end result here is that very little time has been spent building identity, credibility and an authoritative stance on a particular niche.
