Website Design – 6 Benefits of using WordPress as your CMS

19 August 2009 7 Comments

Whether you wish to design a company website or a personal one, WordPress provides easy content management and endless possibilities for your website. Web Design Companies and Web designers across the world are using WordPress as the content management system for websites.

Every website needs good content. Whether you have a company website, an ecommerce website, an information portal or a blog; your site is not likely to succeed without well researched, quality informative content. Content is what makes up your site and adds value for its readers.

Using WordPress for your website is a lot like making other important decisions related to your website. Some may prefer to use a standard content management system instead and may perceive WordPress to be more like a blogging platform than a content management system.

Contrary to what some web designers or end users may perceive, WordPress is not only suitable as a regular blog but can be an equally excellent choice when it comes to CMS. WordPress can be equally beneficial as a company website as it is for creating a blog or a community website. You are able to add content to your website quickly and efficiently. Nevertheless wordpress can have its limitations. Although it is very easy to maintain the site and add content, it may not be possible to integrate all complicated features. WordPress certainly offers many opportunities, but you cannot make all applications work with WordPress yet. In subsequent version this is more likely to be addressed.

6 Benefits of Using WordPress for your Website

1. WordPress is Cost Effective

WordPress offers a cost effective solution for designing your company’s website. WordPress as a software is freely available and is free to download. Any company can use it for free for any commercial purpose.

Although the software is free, you may incur some expense for professional customisation or design of a bespoke theme for your company. Nevertheless wordpress skills are readily available and many web design companies or freelance web designers offer services that are competitively priced.

2. It is Easy to use

WordPress is easy to use. In fact web designers as well end users believe it to be one of the most convenient and user friendly content management systems available today. It is known for its simplicity. You do not require prior technical experience or skills. If you can send an e-mail or use Microsoft Word, then you will be able use WordPress with ease.

3. Benefit from better Search Engine Results

WordPress also makes it easier to optimize your search engine results. That means your site is more likely to land on the first page of Google results, which means people are more likely to find you.

4. Ability to create pages as well posts

Another advantage of using WordPress as a CMS is the flexibility to create both, pages as well as posts within your content. A page is created generally for storing information that will not change frequently, e.g. information about the company, contact information or enquiry form for visitors to your website. For information that will change frequently, you could create a post instead.

The ability to create both standard web pages as well blog posts offers a lot of flexibility for organising and presenting content to visitors. You can have a static home page with post-pages behind it. This way the main home page of your website can always be the same like standard websites, while certain sections within your site could contain frequently updated information, articles, or blogs.

5. A Do It Yourself approach to website maintenance

Due to its simplicity and ease of use, WordPress provides a Do-It-Yourself approach to maintaining your website. You do not need to hire the services of a programmer of a professional web design company for day to day updates or maintenance.

6. Easy to extend

WordPress also offers many add on features that are available as plugins and widgets. Similarly, many designs and layouts are readily available as free or premium themes. These can also be changed or altered to suit your needs. Many additional features can be added to the website with ease without little or no technical knowledge or experience including shopping cart, polls or image gallery.

I have been using Joomla for the past 4 years and have only started using WordPress last year. Joomla is great and powerful but can be a bit complicated for smaller websites where all clients want is to update the odd 2 or 3 pages. In such cases WordPress can be a great CMS platform.

I have been using wordpress for about 2 years and at first I loved it and have started to grow a sour taste in my mouth from it. My grandma moves faster then it does and editing a theme is more difficult then with other blog engines. On the other hand I do agree with most of your comments.
