Website Design: The Costs And Benefits

29 November 2008 One Comment

Designing a website today is not as complex as it used to be. Designing a website has become easer using one of the many web design do it yourself packages available in the market. Today, virtually anyone can build a website. However not everyone has the right skills and experience required to build a complex or professional website with functional features or databases. Although there are plenty of low cost web building tools and services out there; the quality and professionalism is lacking in most.

The requirements to design a personal website are obviously different to the requirements for a business or a company website. For a personal website you can design and build your website using web design software with a little technical knowledge and by experimentation. Alternatively you can use one of the many free online blogging or website platforms such as wordpress.com or blogger.com. This makes the task of designing the website even easier as practically no design or technical skills will be required what so ever. All customisation can be done using an online administration panel. In many cases there is wide range of templates or designs to choose from so you can get a relatively professional design in a matter of hours. You can thus save valuable time that can instead be spent on creating the right content to go on your website.

Ultimately the content of the website is likely to play a crucial role in your website’s success. Quality content is not only useful for website visitors but also for search engines which love new content on websites and tend to rank them higher than websites that do not update content frequently.

We have discussed that both content and design of the website are important. However this alone will not guarantee that your website will be a success commercially. If you have a well designed website with quality content, you will then have to give importance to factors that will encourage people to visit your website. There are many ways in which you can market your website in order to increase traffic and visitors to your website. There are many forms of paid online marketing campaigns available however it can be quite expensive especially for a smaller business.

When you are operating on a small budget it is essential that you build a website that is properly optimized for search engines. You can look at free techniques to market your website. Organic search engine optimisation can help promote your company website on search engines in a cost effective manner. Organic results refer to the ranking of a website in free search results that appear on the main part of the search engine and not the paid ads that appear usually on the side. You will save a lot of money in advertising by focusing on organic search engine optimisation methods. This may be time consuming but certain day to day tasks can be undertaken to ensure your website ranks higher over a period of time

Once your website has been designed it needs to be hosted on a web server in order to be available online to the public. Running your own web server is expensive and requires significant technical skills and experience. However cheap web hosting can be purchased easily form one of the many web hosting companies in the market. You will also need to select and register an appropriate domain name for your website

In summary, building a commercially successful website will require time and is going to cost you. However you have control over how much u spend and what your budget is. You should start by identifying exactly what you wish to achieve form the website and what features your website should have. You should then determine a budget for the website. If you are setting up a personal website you can probably do it yourself by experimenting with one of the do it yourself web design software packages or by using one of the free online blogging or website building platforms. However if you are designing a website for your business and you require a professional website that is commercially successful; then you will need to hire a professional web design or development company for this purpose.
