Most blogs display the publish date on all their posts. The blog post date is typically displayed under the title of the posts, in the comments, and this is in-turn picked up by search engines and displayed on search result pages.

Google Search Results Page with Post Date

One of the main problems with displaying dates on posts is that search engines and readers may associate the information on your older posts to be out of date. Readers may end up assuming it has lost its relevance.

Under default settings, the blog post date is not updated when you update your post with new information.  Even if you keep your content up to date by adding new information from time to time, your readers may look at the publish date and assume the content is old and outdated.

Standard Pubish Date On Blog Posts

This article shows you how to remove date from your blog posts in WordPress which is by far the most popular blogging platform. If you use online hosted blog platforms like Blogger, you can choose to hide blog post date from the settings page.

In WordPress, there are three ways to remove or hide dates from your blog posts.Alternatively, read about Pros and Cons of Displaying Blog Post Date.

Theme Settings

This is only possible on some themes. A majprity of the themes I have used do not provide this option. Themes such as Thesis allow you to choose this from the theme settings. Take a look at your theme settings or layout to see if this option is available.

By using a WordPress Plugin

There are a range of third-party plug-ins that you can use to hide publish date from your blog posts. One such plug-in is WP Post Date Remover.

Removing Blog Post Date Manually by Updating Your Theme

You can just as easily remove the date from your blog posts by manually updating your theme. You don’t need to use FTP as you can access your WordPress theme files from the admin panel of WordPress.

You only need to remove one line of code from a single file to achieve this. A step by step description of what is involved is given below.

Your blog’s theme consists of a number of files. In order to remove the date that appears on your individual posts, you only need to remove one line of code from a single file.  In general for any updates, it is recommended that you make a backup of your file before making any modifications.

Steps involved in updating your theme to remove date from your blog posts:

1. Go to WordPress Admin, and select theme editor under the appearance tab (WordPress 3x). This will display a list of all files.

1. Click on single.php file from your theme. The code of that page will be displayed along with the ability to edit and save your changes.

2. Find the following line of code and remove it or comment it from the template. It is usually displayed below the title.

<?php the_time(); ?>

3. Save your changes. Now when you visit your posts, the date will not be displayed on the page.

Please note that once you remove date on your posts, if your blog uses a caching plug-in then it may take some time for the changes to take affect on your blog. Additionally, it will take more time to be reflected on search engine results. When search engines such as Google re-index your website, the search engine result pages will not show the dates next to your post anymore.

Good Post. I was wondering why some blogs don’t have dates. After reading your article it has made me think that removing dates can offer advantages particularly if your posts are evergreen and not time based.

Removing date can be good technique to keep blog posts evergreen mainly if the topic is not new related. For timeless content it good to hide date.
